Phishing scams are becoming more frequent and more convincing…and small businesses and organizations are common targets.

Recently, we’ve seen a few phishing attempts where scammers pretend to represent the Cody Country Chamber of Commerce and the Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale, using fake email addresses to offer event registrations or sell contact lists. While these specific cases are under review, they’re part of a larger trend affecting businesses everywhere.

Phishing is a fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information.

What is Phishing?

Phishing is a fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information – like passwords, financial details, or contact lists – by pretending to be a trustworthy source.

Common Red Flags:

  • Offers to sell event attendee or email lists
  • Unexpected invoices or payment requests
  • Suspicious links or attachments
  • Slight variations in email addresses (e.g., @codychambers.org instead of @codychamber.org)

How to Stay Safe:

  • Verify the sender’s email before clicking or responding.
  • Don’t download attachments or click links unless you trust the source.
  • Trust your instincts. If something seems off, it probably is.
  • Report suspicious messages to the impersonated organization or your IT provider.

If you’re ever unsure about an email claiming to be from the Cody Chamber, contact us directly at admin@codychamber.org or 307-587-2777.
